We love Wanda! Wanda Jacobson, age 9.
Wanda was born in the farm house. Her father Mahlon Pitney and his father were also born here. Robert D. Pitney puchased the farm in the mid 1800's and the house and barn were built in 1850-1851 with the money from Iron Ore. Robert D Pitney was the brother of Mahlon Pitney of Mendham, NJ. (He was a supreme court Justice) |
Commercial timeIn 1980 Sara Lee filmed an iconic apple pie commercial in our apple orchard. That was a fun day.

That little red building... (Lauren Mae Collins-above) We originally started selling cider hot dogs from a table set up in front of our farm store...they became very popular and in the mid-1990's we turned the "red building" into the "hot dog building".
YUM! |
Pitney/Jacobson/Collins
Wanda Pitney and Henry Jacobson met at Chester Presbyterian Church when Wanda was 16 and when she was 18 they married in 1950. Henry was a carpenter for many years (Jacobson and son's) before helping to take over the daily running's of Hacklebarney Farm. They opened the 'farm store' in the early 1970's, but before that time Wanda's father and mother (Elizabeth Belton Pitney-from Gladstone) worked the farm and sold apples and goods to the Newark market and surrounding areas. They have three Children. Mahlon Jacobson, Robert Jacobson and Karen Jacobson Collins. Karen is now running the farm with the help from her husband Kevin Collins, who also works full time as Assistant Superintendent for Chester Township DPW. They have two children. Lauren and Kyle. Robert has one daughter, Caitlin and she is married to Brian Findlay and they have two children. Case and Claire.

Hacklebarney Farm, as seen in the early 1960's
You can see the apples being loaded up from the 'store' entrance. What is now our bakery building was a four car garage, filled with baskets, tools etc. The Hot dog building is still in its original location, This building was moved for a few years to Hacklebarney State Park in the 1940's and the family sold cold drinks and food. Wanda Jacobson and her father spent many weekends working at it. |
